Each year I like to take on a brand new challenge. I only have two requirements when it comes to me nailing a new challenge and that is:
- It has to challenge my physical ability
- It needs to push my mental boundaries
Both of these have to apply in order for me to give it a go.
This year I had signed up for the Torbay Half Marathon in October. Unfortunately due to being diagnosed with tendonitis and RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) I was unable to compete.
So with no challenge completed this year I decided to hunt for a new one.
If you’d like to donate to the challenge you can do so by visiting my official JustGiving Teenage Cancer Trust Page.
Its Personal
I came across the Teenage Cancer Trust 3,000 Press Up Challenge by accident, after seeing an advert on the social network Facebook.
Press Ups and anything to majorly do with my core area I either avoid or don’t do many of them when working out, probably why there is still a bit of a flabby belly there.
This time, however, I’d need to toughen up a bit and get stuck into the challenge.
The Physical & Mental Challenge
Cancer has also been a disease that seems to like showing major interest in my family. The disease was responsible for the death of 4 members of family in 2000 as well as almost killing my older brother in 2007.
So anything to do with supporting eradicating this disease I’m up for it.
Physically I know I could do 30 press ups everyday without much of a problem. However this would involve me tripling the number of press ups I do on a daily basis.
Not only that but I’d also have to still do my current workout and training schedule which often compromises of lots of deadlifts, swings and cleans.
Mentally is where I knew I’d fall down, you see whilst I can do 30 press ups everyday, maintaining that consistency is a major problem for me. Some days I’d make an excuse too tired, don’t feel like them today and so on.
So for the 3,000 Press Up challenge the difficulty would be in maintaining that consistent day to day grind, putting up with the pain.
Correcting the Form
One of the major areas I’ve noticed, since taking part in the challenge, is my form.
Sometimes I’ll thrash my head down which causes all kinds of neck issues, other times I don’t go low enough. I’m denying myself the full pain that comes from doing these press-ups.
Overtime and having watched myself over and over again I have been attempting to correct my form so that I’m smashing out the press ups without much of a problem.
Still lots of work to do.
